Medicare Mental Health Care Plans & Rebates
At Dante Psychology, I support clients who have a valid Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from their doctor. This plan provides access to a significant Medicare rebate to help offset the cost of therapy.
Current Session Fees: A standard psychological consultation is $250.
Current Medicare Rebates: With a valid MHCP, you are entitled to a Medicare rebate of $101.55 (Registered Psychologist) per session.
Out of Pocket Cost: After the rebate is applied, your out of pocket cost (gap fee) will be $148.45 per session.
Billing Policy: Dante Psychology is a private billing clinic and does not offer bulk billing. The full session fee must be paid by the day of your appointment, and we will process the Medicare rebate directly to your nominated bank account on your behalf.
How the 10 Session Limit Works
Medicare provides rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. This funding is released in two stages to ensure your treatment remains on track:
Initial 6 Sessions: When your GP creates your Mental Health Care Plan, they will provide a referral for your first 6 sessions.
Progress Review: After your sixth session, I will write a brief progress report to your doctor. You will then need to attend a review appointment with your GP.
Additional 4 Sessions: If your GP determines that further therapy is clinically necessary, they will approve an additional 4 sessions, completing your 10 session allocation for the year.
How to Get Started with a Mental Health Care Plan
Book a Long Consultation with Your GP: Let the receptionist know you are booking for a Mental Health Care Plan so your doctor has adequate time to assess your symptoms.
Obtain Your Referral: Your GP will assess your eligibility and, if appropriate, provide you with the MHCP and a formal referral letter to Dante Psychology.
Book Your Appointment: Contact the clinic to schedule your initial session. Ensure you provide your Medicare details and email a copy of your referral prior to your appointment.
Pay and Claim: Following your session, you will pay the full private fee. We will immediately lodge the claim with Medicare, and the rebate will typically appear in your account within 24 to 48 hours.
