Victims of Crime, Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence

Experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, or being the victim of a crime can profoundly disrupt your sense of safety, autonomy, and trust. These experiences frequently leave a lasting imprint on your nervous system, shaping how you perceive yourself, relate to others, regulate your emotions, and navigate daily life.

It is common to carry heavy burdens of anxiety, panic, hyper-vigilance, mistrust, and emotional dysregulation.

Beyond the physical and emotional distress, trauma also often generates deep-seated feelings of shame, guilt, self-blame, or a sense of feeling “dirty.” These reactions are common protective responses from a nervous system that experienced intense negativity and is trying its best to make sense of what happened – and these are reactions that can be changed.

Working with a Male Psychologist?

For many survivors, particularly those whose trauma was inflicted by a male figure, the prospect of working with a male practitioner can feel intimidating. While perpetrators of violence can be of any gender, statistically many survivors have experienced harm at the hands of men.

Engaging in therapy with a male psychologist can, when appropriate and felt as safe, become a powerful part of the therapeutic journey.

Within a structured, respectful, and safe therapeutic environment, experiencing consistent professional boundaries, transparent communication, and genuine respect provides an opportunity to observe and interact with safe male behaviours.

Over time, this can help repair the ability to trust, improve relational fears, and rebuild confidence in interpersonal dynamics.
